Wildcats News · MPSSAA Cancels Spring Sports Season

Dear Coaches and WJ Community,
Please see the message below from Jeff Sullivan, MCPS Systemwide Director of Athletics, and the attached statement from the MPSSAA regarding the cancellation of Spring Sports for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. While it is not what we had hoped for, it is certainly the smartest and safest direction for us to take at this time. We will continue to support our student/athletes in a variety of ways even though they won’t be competing, and I will keep you updated on our continuing efforts to support them. I hope you and your families will stay safe and well as we traverse this unprecedented challenge. Please continue to show your Wildcat Pride and resolve as we move forward with the next steps.
With warmest regards,
Tom Rogers – Athletic Director

Today, at the State Board of Education meeting, Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools, announced the cancellation of all MPSSAA events for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.  I have attached the MPSSAA statement, as well as the statement for MCPS Athletics.  Please share these with your respective communities.

I want to personally thank you for your efforts and continued leadership during these unprecedented times.  We will collectively need to champion our efforts moving forward, as we strategically and safely prepare for our return to competition.

In the meantime, we will continue to provide support for our athletic directors, athletic coordinators, coaches, student-athletes, schools, and communities.  More information and resources will be provided in the coming days and weeks.  In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact our office with any questions, needs, or items of concern.  Together #WeRAISE!

 Take care,

 Dr. Jeffrey K. Sullivan, CMAA

This includes the remainder of the 2020 Boys and Girls Basketball State Championships and all spring sports, as well as spring State Championships. The MPSSAA will in turn begin focusing all efforts on aligning the return of interscholastic athletics with the Maryland Strong Road Map to Recovery and the multi-phased approach within each stage of the recovery. The MPSSAA has also cancelled its Student-Athlete Leadership Conference and the Minds in Motion Scholarship banquet. The MPSSAA will continue to honor senior scholarship winners through its Minds in Motion Scholarship program and will announce each of the $1,000 scholarship winners online in the coming weeks. With this announcement, the MPSSAA wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude and admiration to all of our member schools’ graduating seniors, underclassmen, coaches, administrators, and extracurricular athletic and activity sponsors who have dedicated countless hours to these programs. The MPSSAA and the Maryland State Department of Education, share your collective desire for the return of these highly beneficial educational programs when it is safe for all school communities.
