Tryouts for sports are held by season. Fall sports tryouts generally begin the 2nd week of August so families should plan summer vacations accordingly. For all sports, attendance at tryouts is mandatory to participation
The 2018-2019 Fall tryouts
MAY begin on August 8th AND MUST begin by August 11th.
Tryouts for Cheerleading & Poms are held late in the school year for the following year so that interested participants may attend summer camps. The first day of Fall practice will be communicated by the coaches to the athletes selected for the teams.
Winter tryouts begin Thursday, November 15th, 2018
Spring tryouts begin Friday, March 1, 2019. The first game is approximately three (3) weeks after the first practice.
Specific tryout information is posted by coaches on their team pages as it becomes available and tryout information is also disseminated at school by posters, coaches meetings and morning announcements.
Cross Country, Indoor Track and Track & Field do not generally hold tryouts. Athletes should report to the first practices for those teams in good condition and ready to begin running or participating in their field events.
MCPS Information & Forms
Parents & athletes should CAREFULLY review the MCPS Athletics Page and all the information in the PARENT/STUDENT section and the HEALTH/SAFETY section linked from those tabs.
As explained on the MCPS Athletics pages, all student-athletes must undergo baseline concussion testing at least once every two years. This testing is administered at WJ and scheduled during the summer for Fall sports, and during the school year for Winter & Spring sports. Check the “Sports Medicine” column when you click “More” in the green bar at the top of this page for additional concussion testing information and the scheduled dates at WJ.
Unless all of the necessary paperwork is submitted online PRIOR TO THE START OF TRYOUTS using the myMCPS Parent Portal as described on the MCPS Forms page Student-athletes will not be allowed to tryout for teams or particpate on teams that do not require tryouts. It is highly recommended that students attend concussion testing prior to tryouts. However, students will be allowed to attend tryouts without a valid concussion baseline test. Students selected for teams will not be allowed to participate in scrimmages or games without a valid concussion baseline test.
